  Internship Overview

The MAOS internship program provides experiences for students that most regular comprehensive high schools cannot offer, the opportunity for professional work experience under the supervision of an experienced professional in the field of math or science. Mentors are recruited for their willingness to share their work and expertise with students. The Professional Advisory Panel also assists MAOS in recruiting mentors and providing opportunities for MAOS internships.

Each MAOS student is required to complete an 80 hour internship in the field of math or science. Students are encouraged to begin thinking about their internships during their junior year. The internship is usually begun (and often completed) during the summer between the junior and senior year.

The purpose of the internship is to give students skills and knowledge in math and science, experience not available in traditional high school classrooms. Often during the internship experience, students learn far more than is possible in a classroom experience about which careers they do and do not want to pursue.

The value of the internship program is best expressed by a quote from one student's Internship Log, "In all, this is probably one of the most memorable periods of my life and will forever be... I now have an understanding of the scientific process through real world experience."
