The Internship Program
The MAOS internship program provides experiences for students that most regular comprehensive high schools cannot offer, the opportunity for professional scientific work experience under supervision of an experienced scientific professional. Mentors are recruited for their willingness to share their work and expertise with students.
Students participate in a developing network with research laboratories, schools of higher education, business and industry. Often during the internship experience, students learn far more than is possible in a classroom experience about what they want to do, and what they do not want to do in their careers.
The purpose and value of the internship program are best expressed by a quote from one student's Internship Log, "In all, this is probably one of the most memorable periods of my life and will forever be... I now have an understanding of the scientific process through real world experience."
Senior Internship
Each MAOS senior will complete a five unit course entitled “Internship.” This course is taken outside of the traditional school day often being completed during the summer between the junior and senior year, or as time allows during the school year.
The purpose of the internship is to give students skills and knowledge in math and science, experience not available in traditional high school classrooms. Students who have preceded you have typically learned more about what it is that they want to do, or what they do not want to do, as a result of this experience, than they could in any traditional class room setting.
Your job as a junior is to make a proposal for your senior internship, a proposal that suits you, your mentor, and your MAOS internship advisor.
