MAOS Application for the 2026-2027 School Year - This application opens December 1st and must be completed by Sunday, January 18th, to be considered. If you do not currently reside in Monterey High’s boundaries, you must complete the MPUSD transfer paperwork between November 1st and December 5th.

Selection is open to students throughout Monterey County and is increasingly competitive. Admission is based on an application process that includes:

*Teacher recommendations must be from current Math and English teachers. Applicants, email the link to the recommendation form to your current Math and English teachers. If a student has the same teacher for BOTH Math and English, that teacher will need to fill out the form twice.

NOTE: The MAOS Application deadline is 11:59p.m. Sunday, January 18, 2026.

For students who do NOT currently reside in the Monterey High School attendance area, an A transfer form will need to be completed between November 1 and December 5, 2025. If you are unsure if you reside in the Monterey High School attendance area, enter your address in the following link: School Finder. Please note: All students who live in Del Rey Oaks, Seaside, or Marina must complete an Intra District Transfer form, which can be accessed HERE. Students who live outside of the district (Salinas, Prunedale, Castroville, etc.), must complete an Inter District Enrollment which can be accessed from the student’s current school district office. When applying to MAOS, all students must write an essay for the application to be considered. 

Students are asked to choose from one of the prompts below and write one essay with a maximum of 500 words

Question 1: 

Describe a time when you worked hard to achieve a goal, especially when it was difficult. What did you learn about yourself?

Question 2: 

Tell us about a challenge or obstacle you faced. How did you handle it, and what did you take away from the experience?

Question 3: 

Think about a topic or subject that excites you. Why are you passionate about it, and how have you explored it outside of the classroom?

Question 4: 

Describe a time when you took the lead or helped others in a meaningful way. What happened, and what did you learn from that experience?

Question 5: 

What is a problem in your school, community, or the world that you care about? How would you like to help solve it?

Question 6: 

Everyone has a story that shapes who they are. Share an experience, tradition, or value that is important to your identity.

Question 7: 

Describe a project, idea, or activity you started or contributed to that you're proud of. Why does it matter to you?
